I first had a glance to Jim in the parking lot of Gibson’s discount stores in Montrose, Colorado, where his breeder brought him to meet me at the agreed-upon time. A man I met briefly just lost a Wolfhound named Zaephod, and though this man and I had nothing in common, and I would not even considered taking a restaurant recommendation from him, there was something about the way he talked about Zaephod who stayed with me for years. I did not know anything of breeders and their varying scruples at the time, as all my other dogs had been pound rescues. I saw an ad for Wolfhound puppies in the Denver Post one day and without doing the slightest bit of research, called the number and bought a dog.

In the seven years since that day, I have heard many things about various breeders, few of them complimentary. I have heard the words “puppy mill” used in connection with their names. I have heard about those who breed sick dogs to sick dogs to make a buck or two off the litter, with little or no regard for the future of the puppies that they sell. I have no way of knowing whether any of that is true of Jim’s breeder, but it strikes me that if you’re out to make a buck, breeding dogs who eat enough to double their body weight six times during the first twelve weeks of their lives might not be the very best strategy.

Actually the first day when we brought him home from the animal shelter, Jim took over the place next to the arm chair in the living room as his favorite spot. From there he is watching our life. He is observing my boyfriend when he is unpacking the groceries in the kitchen, and he is following me with his eyes when I ravage the refrigerator at night. When I am working at my desk I feel his stare in my back.Often I ask myself what is Jim thinking of me? Does he know that I cheat on my boyfriend with his tennis partner? Does he have a clue that I get no work done on my book for weeks now? Does he think I am a failure? Does he feel disappointed? At night, when he comes to my desk and lays his head on my lap, I think he wants to tell me something. Does he want to complain because I don’t pay him enough attention? Does he want to cheer me up?

Gradually Jim and I became very closed friends. I nearly can not live without him in my life. Just like a soulmate he seems could understand me completely. Something I really wanna do for Jim that I thought about it for long time but could not figure out what I could do for him properly. Just one day afternoon an ad in magazine occurred me. It was a little dog carrier which looked very cute and special. To be honest, I never had thought about the dog carrier. But at that moment I realized it was just a home for Jim. So I asked one of my friends who’s a vet that how to choose carriers for your dogs then afterwards decided to buy one. Simply gorgeous! It was perfect for Jim. Everything was suitable to him and I would never worry about his coldness and loneliness while I go out. Hey there, just get a dog carrier for your pet if you really love him. It’s probably the best gift for pups.

In general, dogs are loyal. They are protective of their keepers/trainers. They are fierce and strong. They are quick and keen. They are capable of responding immediately and acting logically. They are very smart and are easily trainable. On top of it all, they are industrious, task-oriented, and committed. They are man’s best friends. These are the many reasons why dogs were chosen to be the companions of our security forces.

Nowadays, you see many security personnel and authorities from the police and military forces that are accompanied by dogs. Usually, they choose German Shepherds, but through advanced training and experimentation, other breeds are now of use to the military as well. Police dogs are commonly used for tracking purposes, for search and rescue operations, and for security attack purposes.

Police Dog Training requires training not just for the dog but for the handler as well.

Both the dog and his handler will be chosen from a wide variety of aspiring dogs and individuals. After selection, they will be subjected to careful training so as ensure that they have all the required skills for the police services.

For the prospective dog handlers, they are usual given a probationary training that will last for two years. This involves lectures about proper dog-training techniques, canine psychology, dog-learning processes, veterinary practices, canine physiological needs, and legislation. The training will demand both physical and mental abilities from the trainer, not to mention utmost patience and commitment.

As for the dog, the police dog training is designed to develop the protecting and attacking skills of the dog, while improving the natural canine instinct and behavior as well.

For the dogs, the first step in the police dog training is the identification of the natural abilities of the dog. Obedience training and aggression control is also taught. Essential to proper police dog training is a controlled temperament of the dog even in the presence of strangers and other pets.

Throughout the training, a particular concept that should be embedded well to the dog’s behavior is the urge to protect and serve the pack leader- that is identified as the dog’s handler. The training’s primary goal is to teach the dog to follow the handler’s orders, respond to the handler’s needs, and protect the handler from threats.

After the training, the dog should be able to track offenders or missing persons through scent; search and track bombs, drugs, or dangerous chemicals; apprehend escaping offenders; and protect their handlers during dangerous situations.

All throughout the police dog training, a strong bond between the dog and the handler should be maintained. Positive reinforcement should also be used throughout the whole training process so as to ensure progressive learning and motivated behavior.

Dog agility training helps to enhance your dog stamina for this sport which involves jumping, climbing obstacles or pole weaving. The obstacles for this type of show were fashioned after horse show jumping. They made their first appearance in the UK at the Crufts Dog Show in 1979. Since its inception the sport has grown in popularity as a premier dog sport for show and entertainment. Although small dogs are allowed in agility, medium to large size dogs have excelled.

So, lets talk about what is dog agility training. Dog agility is a sport were a dog makes it way through a obstacle course with the help of a handler. The dog is timed to see how long it takes the dog to finish the course. The dog gets graded on accuracy and obedience as it takes orders from the handler. When starting dog agility training the dog starts on easy obstacles and more are added as teh dog masters the skill. Agility helps to determine whether or not a dog has the agility to compete.

Digging holes in the backyard, chewing a hole in your favourite sock, running laps in the kitchen – dogs are always on the move. Why not channel some of that indefatigable energy into a hobby that can be fun for both you and your furry friend? Training your dog (and yourself) for agility competitions will create a fun working relationship that both of you can enjoy. Find everything you need to know in this fun guide that includes information on pre-agility training, detailed advice on correction-free training, and step-by-step agility training techniques. Also learn how to make your own agility obstacles, use a clicker as a motivational tool, and officially enter agility trials. Participating in agility competitions can build a strong, enduring bond between you and your dog. Read “The Beginner’s Guide to Dog Agility” to learn the ins and outs of this exciting hobby.

Before starting agility training, a dog should be examined by a veterinarian carefully. A pre-requisite for joining agility training is that the dog should be able to obey the basic commands such as ‘sit,’ ‘lie down’ and ‘come.’ A well-trained dog can easily follow the different commands that are required by the sport. There are a number of ways to carry out agility training, but the trainer should select a method that fits a dog’s needs. Agility training should be fun, so the instructor should not be too critical or competitive.

Having the correct dog training supplies can enhance your training activities thus getting you better results. There are several dog training supplies available, depending on the type of training that you are trying to accomplish. For example, training hunting dogs is all about having the dog recognize scents and to be able to follow that scent to the prize. You may want to purchase a scent injection kit or maybe a duck dummy to allow the dog to get the fill of finding the hunt. There are also special equipments for dogs that are trained to help the blind and hearing impaired.

Dogs that are trained for professional duties may need special harnesses. Police dogs are frequently seen with special harness that wrap around the hind legs and go down the back with a police sign across the side of the harness. Training a dog may also require body protection, since these dogs are trained to attack or pursue criminals.

Non Pull Dog Harness By Sporn – Medium Black

The Non-Pull Harness is very easy to use and simple to fit. The elastic web and mesh that cover the dog’s chest stretch and give with his natural movement. This allows maximum comfort for the dog, whilst giving the handler total control. Fabric “Sherpa Sleeves” provide extra comfort to eliminate rubbing. Available in black, sizes Small, Medium and Large.

LUPI Dog Training Harness – Large

No dog needs to pull on the lead. Lupi works by converting forward motion into an upward lift and so stops pulling.

Of course those types of supplies are for dogs with special training, but for the regular dog there are also many training supplies available.

Dogs that have not ever been trained or dogs that have been in bad situations develop behavior problems that will need to be corrected. That that snap at passing people can be corrected with muzzles or dogs that tend to run away may need an electronic collar to keep them in the yard. These are all tools that trainers have used that have made a difference.

Mesh Dog Muzzle Size 2

MasterPlus Pro Remote Dog Training Collar Kit

MASTERPLUS PRO Spray Training Collar. Stops unwanted behavior Kind and humane Surprises and distracts from a distance Water proof Range of up to 300 meters. Recommended by vets, behaviorists and trainers. A truly miraculous training system for correcting unwanted behaviors. MasterPlus Pro invokes the element of surprise with a remote controlled spray activated at the instant the undesirable behavior occurs. It acts on three of the dog’s senses: sound from the hiss, touch from the spray and sight from the mist.Crucially, the spray cannot be associated with the owner who may be up to 300 meters away but only with the dog’s behavior. Once the dog has been distracted, it is easy to show what you would prefer him to do instead and then reward. The MasterPlus Pro is ideal for resolving many behavioral problems such as aggression, chasing, stealing and recall issues. The MasterPlus Pro kit contains the collar unit, remote control, batteries, a refill canister, carry case and instruction booklet.

Crate training is an example of training your dog to be more obedient. Dogs do not like to use the bathroom in the place where they sleep. This is a great way to train you dog to use the bathroom in appropriate places, like outside.

Before using any of these product, you need to consult with your vet to make sure that your training methods or the material brought will not hurt your dog in any way. Dog training supplies are meant to help to destroy your dog.

It is also a great idea to sign up for pet training sessions. Most local big name pet stores have free clinics for pet owners that teach you how to train you dog for certain situations. They also have great sessions on what dog training supplies should be used and which should not.

Choosing the right dog obedience supplies can help you control your excitable dog, whether you take him to a dog obedience class or try your own hand at teaching your pet obedience. Contrary to popular belief, disciplinary items are not the only necessary items for obedience training. There are a wealth of preventative items and encouraging items as well.

For instance, treats are some of the important dog obedience supplies, and they are generally overlooked because people fear that treats are a detriment to obedience training. That is not at all true. In fact, the exact opposite is true. It is important to reward your dog when he goes something right. Treats are the best way to do this. In their own way, dogs are extraordinarily brilliant. It will take your dog very little time to realize that every time you tell him to sit and he does it, he gets a treat. He will quickly come to the conclusion that sitting gets him treats, that staying gets him treats, that heeling gets him treats, and so on.

Coachies Training Treats (Poultry Beef & Liver) (Pack Size: 75g)

Small palatable and calorie conscious. No artificial colours or flavours. Wheat, gluten and GM free. These tasty miniature motivators are perfect to use in reward-based training. The semi-moist heart shaped treats are highly palatable and do not break up in your pocket or treat bag. Coachies are light on calories (approximately 1 calorie per 0.35g Coachie heart) and contain no artificial flavours or colours, as well as being wheat, gluten and GM free.

Collars and leads are also essential dog obedience supplies. Harnesses are preferable over collars, because owners can be firmer when giving orders without worrying about harming or choking the dog. Moreover, harness are more conducive to asserting dominance with your dogs. Of course there are also electronic training collars, in which case a collar is necessary over a harness. There are also anti-bark training collars, which as you may guess teach dogs not to bark when they should not. They are also a means to curb excessive barking.

Dog Car Seat & Walking Harness – Small

Very Secure and Safe ~ Protects against injury in the event of an accident / Emergency braking ~ Stops your dog jumping around vehicle ~ Fully Padded air cushion system on chest of harness

House breaking aids also key items when it comes to dog obedience supplies. House training a dog can be a very tedious process, but if you go about it the right way, it can be extremely easy. There are potty pads, which can be used not only to teach house training, but also provides a safe place for the dog to go in the house. The general idea behind potty pads and products like them is that you as the owner first train your dog to go on the papers, then gradually move them closer and closer to one or more doors in the house. The dog thus starts going closer to the door to do his business. Ideally, when you eventually remove the potty pads altogether, your dog will start scratching around the door or otherwise signaling that he needs to go outside and do his business.

Dogs are great companions and the most loving creatures. However, some owners make common mistakes that can lead to aggressive behavior.

The first most common mistake is spanking or whipping your pet. Instilling fear in any animal is not appropriate, and will never encourage good behavior. Always be firm with your pet when teaching new or breaking bad behaviors – but physical aggression is the worst possible mistake. Your pet should know you are the boss, but should always be taught in a loving environment.

Second, is encouraging your dog to play tug. Because dogs can be aggressive by nature, encouraging tugging can lead to biting and/or being too rough in general. Playing tug is an aggressive game to begin with, thus encourages aggressive behavior. Instead, consider taking your dog with you to run, play Frisbee or catch, or just for a nice long walk. Burning off energy for your pet will help eliminate aggressive, pent up energy, and it will be enjoyable for all involved.

Finally, keeping your animal caged or penned up constantly is another mistake. Dogs are social animals, and like to be a part of the family. They also need a lot of attention and exercise. There may certainly be times when it is important for your pet to be confined to an area, or cage, but always make sure the area is safe, clean, has fresh food and water, and never leave them in there for more than a few hours at a time.

Understanding your dogs needs, its nature, and your responsibilities as a good pet owner are important. Dogs like routines, require love and attention, proper care and nutrition, and plenty of exercise to understand that their owner and those around them care. Give your dog love and your dog will be happy, healthy, and a joy to have as part of the family for many years.

Training your dog to sit is not complicated. The method you’ll use to train your dog to sit is known as the “lure and reward” method. You’ll lure your dog into a sitting position and then reward her right away. It’s a popular method because it’s successful, easy for you to do, and easy for your dog to learn.

A great “side-effect” of this method is that it allows a natural motion to become a visual cue… a form of sign language for your dog. This is so cool!

Dogs are very visual and they often respond to body motions better than they do to sounds. Keep this in mind because sometimes it can work against you: to your dog, your voice may be saying one thing while your body language is saying the opposite. In dog communication, body language trumps verbal language every time.

Imagine being able to use hand signals as commands for your dog when you’re on the phone, or too far away for your dog to hear you. It’s definitely something worth pursuing. So let’s get on with training your dog to sit.

How to Train Your Dog to Sit

1. Load up your pocket, a bag or pouch with treats. Treats like Mark & Chappell Nutri Boosters Dog Treats. These are perfect treats for puppies. They are bit size and easy for the puppy to digest.

2. Take your dog to an area where there won’t be a lot of distractions.

3. While your dog is standing, put a treat in your hand, and move your hand to within an inch or so of your dog’s nose. Make sure she smells the treat hidden in your hand and is focusing her attention on it.

4. Move your hand slowly backward, about an inch over her head, between her ears, toward her tail. Keep your hand low over her head so she doesn’t try to leap up to get the treat.

5. As your dog watches your hand with the treat move just above her head, she will raise her chin up-and her butt will plop down into a sitting position. When that happens, immediately give her the treat and say “Good!”

6. Now move a few steps away. Get your dog to stand and follow you.

7. Repeat Steps 3, 4 and 5.

8. Did you notice you haven’t told her to “Sit” yet? Don’t say that until you can get her to sit consistently by moving your treat-filled hand over her head, toward her tail. Once you’re sure she’s going to do this properly the next time you do that, say “Sit” a split second before you start moving your hand. When she sits, immediately reward her with the treat and “Good!”

9. Repeat this process five times, saying “Sit” just before she does so.

If your dog backs up instead of sitting down as you move your treat-filled hand over her head and toward her tail, position her so that she’s facing out of a corner and cannot back up without hitting the wall.

Practice this lesson two or three times each day during the week. Vary the time of day and location.

Do no more than five repetitions during each lesson. Reduce the number of repetitions as your dog learns… eventually asking her to sit just once, two or three times a day. Dogs tend to learn to sit quickly, and repeating the lesson too often will only make them bored.

After a few of days of successful “Sit” practice, start to focus a bit on your hand movement. As you move your treat-filled hand over your dog’s head and toward her tail, begin to emphasize an upward sweep of your hand… less over her head, more in an upward curve toward your body.

A very effective way to train a puppy is to crate the puppy when the it is unsuppervised. I have heard that some people think that this is crule. This is so far from the truth. The truth is if you are trying to train a puppy to not soil his surroundings this one of the most effective way to accomplish this task.

Dogs naturally love den-like enclosures and an indoor kennel

crate will satisfy this desire. Dogs are also naturally reluctant to soil where they sleep so crating is an extremely effective housebreaking tool.

Below I want to look at one or two effective kennels.

42inch Large dog cage / Crate with 2 openings

This cage is collapsible in seconds when not in use. It comes with a carry handle for easy store. Has plastic base with sides to keep in any accidents while on journey.

If you have a smaller dog then this should be a good choice. The 36inch Medium dog cage / Crate with 2 openings.

This is a very strong solid dog cage- has 2 large openings – take seconds to fold away and seconds to set up – these are not the cheap light weight models that don’t last. These are just a few choices..

Many people feel that using an indoor kennel crate for their puppy is somehow cruel. Nothing could be further from the truth. When used properly, a crate can be one of the most valuable tools for training and maintaining your new puppy.

Dogs naturally love den-like enclosures and an indoor kennel crate will satisfy this desire. Dogs are also naturally reluctant to soil where they sleep so crating is an extremely effective housebreaking tool. Crating can keep a puppy away from potentially dangerous household items and can be moved from room to room whenever necessary.

Crating can help to ease separation anxiety and prevent destructive behaviour when you cannot physically supervise your puppy. When you have to leave your puppy alone or when you go to bed at night, you can rest assure that your puppy is not only safe, but he is also not chewing your furniture, electrical wires, rugs and so on.

It is very important that you introduce the crate to your puppy as a safe place to rest in. You should therefore never use the crate as a form of punishment. Your puppy should associate his crate with security, comfort and enjoyment. There are quite a few things that you can do to foster these positive feelings about the crate in your dog.

Drop pieces of food such as kibble or special treats in your puppy’s crate throughout the day. As your puppy discovers these treats it will reinforce the notion that the crate is a positive place. Along the same principle you can also feed your puppy in his crate.

When you first introduce your puppy to his crate, praise and fondle him when he goes inside. Make a game of it by including rewarding him with treats when he enters. Never attempt to force your dog into his crate. However, at night when going to bed you may have to place your puppy inside and then shut the door. It is recommended that you place the crate near to your bed to reduce your puppy’s anxiety at night. Dogs are pack animals and do not like to sleep alone.

It is an excellent idea to begin crating your puppy for short periods of time while you are home with him. This will prevent your puppy from making the negative association that going into his crate means that you will be leaving him alone.

It is important to allow your dog the opportunity to fully eliminate before he goes into his crate. Young puppies have very little bladder and sphincter control so you should not crate your pet for extended periods of time. Puppies under 4 months of age should not be crated more than 3 hours. Except for overnight, puppies and dogs should not be crated for more than 5 hours at a time.

Always remove your dogs’ collar before crating. Ensure that your crate is the proper size. If it is too big, your puppy may eliminate in one end of the crate and sleep in the other. If this occurs you may have to block off a section of the crate to discourage this behaviour.

Many dogs who are properly introduced to crating at a young age grow to like their crate as their place to rest and get away from it all. This is ideal for owners because you can then use your crate when travelling or visiting and not have to worry about your dog. He has his safe, secure place to go.
